Let’s face it, we’re all busy, and there are so many demands on our time and attention.
This can often mean reduced quality time with family, and even when you’re together with your nearest and dearest, regularly checking your phone or tablet or just watching the TV prevents meaningful engagement.
Of course, your children or grandchildren are often using their own electronic devices, so there aren’t many thoughtful conversations happening in many households today.
And the days turn into weeks, turn into months, turn into years…
I just read Jim Sheils’s transformative book, The Family Board Meeting, and it hit me hard.
Reminding us that we have limited one-to-one engagement with our family, he reveals why carving out dedicated, quality time with your loved ones, especially your children, is not just important—it’s essential.
However, it’s unlikely to happen naturally nowadays so the author suggests embracing a simple and effective format:
The Family Board Meeting
1. Schedule Regular Meetings:
Set aside one-on-one time with each child, grandchild (or your spouse) every 90 days—uninterrupted and device-free.
2. Plan Engaging Activities:
Choose activities that both you both enjoy, fostering genuine connection and fun. It could be as simple as a long walk followed by lunch – with no screens or devices allowed.
3. Be Present:
During these meetings, be fully present. Listen, engage, and enjoy the moment without distractions.
He shares incredible examples in the book of families that have been transformed by this simple technique. He also explained that the strategy shouldn’t be limited to young children but can be used even if your kids are grown up and living their own lives.
The point is to be intentional about your conversations. Remove the noise and focus on asking great questions and really listening to the responses.
Regular, focused time with your family strengthens emotional bonds and creates lasting memories. Consistent one-on-one time encourages honest conversations, allowing you to understand and support each other better.
Investing time in your family ensures that your legacy is not just a successful career but also a thriving, connected family.
