The Hidden Value of Financial Advice: More Than Just Numbers

Managing personal finances is often more than a numbers game – it comes steeped in emotional stresses, time burdens, and opportunity costs. A recent study by Vanguard (June 2025) sheds light on the significant value people derive from professional financial advice – beyond just returns and portfolio metrics.

Here’s what the research found, and why it matters.

Key Findings

  1. Reduced Financial Stress and More Peace of Mind
    • Clients who receive financial advice report significantly lower levels of financial stress than those managing their finances independently. Only 14% of advised clients report high levels of financial stress, compared with 27% of self-directed investors.
    • 86% of advised clients say that they have “greater peace of mind” when thinking about their finances compared to if they were managing them alone.
    • Human advisers tend to generate more improvement in both positive emotions (confidence, satisfaction, security) and reductions in negative emotions (worry, anxiety, etc.).
  2. Time Savings in Daily Life
    • Around 76% of advised clients say the advice saves them time. On average, clients report about 2 hours per week saved (over 100 hours per year) by not having to think about or deal with financial issues themselves.
    • The activities that drive those time savings are varied, including tasks such as investment selection, portfolio monitoring, goal-setting, progress checks, and tax-efficient planning. The emotional benefit (peace of mind, trust in what your adviser does) also contributes significantly to freeing up time.
  3. Better Wellbeing Outside Finance
    • What do people do with the extra time? Many spend it on leisure, family, exercise, and household tasks – things that improve quality of life.
    • At work, these advantages also become apparent. Financial stress is a major distraction: the survey found that among employees with financial plans, advice reduces time distracted by financial worries. On average, advised employees saved nearly 2 hours per week of work time that would otherwise be lost to financial stress.
    • The productivity gains for employers are non-trivial: for those workers reporting financial stress, estimated productivity savings were in the region of £2,200 to £5,850 per year per advised employee, simply from reduced distraction.
  4. Expectations vs Reality: Some Value Comes as a Surprise
    • Interestingly, while many clients expect some of the financial – or portfolio-related benefits when engaging an adviser, fewer anticipate just how much emotional comfort or time savings they will actually get.
    • For example:

      • 87% of clients cited their portfolio value as a reason for signing up for advice.

      • 74% considered the emotional factor (peace of mind) when becoming a client.

    • • But only 38% initially considered time savings as a goal. That said, once they have advice, over three-quarters (76%) do report that it does save time.

What This Means for You and For Us.

  • Holistic value of advice: As your advisers, what we aim to deliver is more than excellent investment performance. These findings affirm that emotional well-being (reduced stress, increased confidence) and the ability to reallocate decision-making time to other priorities are significant components of the value we provide.
  • Quantifying non-financial returns: If measuring success solely by returns misses part of the picture, then we should regularly check in on how you feel about your financial situation, how stressful or manageable it feels, and whether the process is consuming too much time. These are valid dimensions of success.
  • Leveraging the freed time: The study shows that clients put their saved time to meaningful use, such as spending time with family, exercising, and resting. Identifying ways to reduce complexity, delegate tasks, or use digital tools effectively may free you up to focus on what matters personally.
  • For employers and business clients: If you’re sponsoring pension or savings plans, remember that supporting employees in obtaining good financial advice could reduce distractions at work, improve productivity, and ultimately benefit your business as well as your staff’s well-being.

Practical Takeaways

Here are some actions you might consider in light of this research:

  • Review your financial plan periodically, not just in terms of numbers, but how well it’s working for you – how much stress it causes, how much time you’re spending on it, and whether you feel in control.
  • Continue using our services in areas you find especially time-consuming (such as tax planning and monitoring investments), while still maintaining personal human interaction in areas where emotional reassurance matters most.
  • If you’re overwhelmed with financial tasks, delegate where possible— whether that’s to us or other professionals, such as lawyers or accountants.

Final Word

Financial advice isn’t just about optimising returns -it’s also about easing your mind and freeing up your time. The Vanguard study makes clear that many clients underestimate the value of emotional and time advice – but once they have it, it becomes central to how they experience their finances.

By acknowledging and discussing these less tangible benefits, we can better serve you, not only to grow your wealth but also to reduce stress, give you the time to focus on your life priorities, and make the journey smoother.

Have you experienced less stress and more time to focus on what really matters to you?
