And why your money needs to work harder than ever.
In 1971, a first-class stamp in the UK cost just 3 pence. Today, it costs £1.70. That’s a 5,400% increase over 53 years. If the price had risen in line with general inflation, that same stamp would cost just 37 pence today.
This isn’t just a quirky fact – it’s a vivid example of how inflation can quietly but relentlessly erode the value of money over time. And the pace of change is accelerating.
In April 2023, a first-class stamp cost £1.35. Just one year later, in April 2024, it rose to £1.65 – a 22% increase. Over the past two years, the price has increased by a staggering 73.7%.
Now imagine the same inflationary pressure applied to the cost of your weekly shopping, your next holiday, your children’s education, or care in retirement. When the cost of living rises this quickly, standing still financially means falling behind.
This is why relying on cash savings or ultra-cautious investments can be so dangerous. While holding cash might feel secure, over time it guarantees a loss of purchasing power. The pounds you’ve saved won’t stretch as far in the future as they do today.
So, how do you protect your wealth against this silent threat?
The answer lies in investing in real assets — things that grow not just in nominal terms, but in real, inflation-adjusted value. Global equities, for example, represent ownership in businesses around the world. And those businesses, when well managed, respond to inflation by increasing their prices, growing their profits, and ultimately passing those returns on to shareholders.
Over the long term, this makes them one of the most effective tools for preserving and growing your wealth in real terms.
Inflation is more than just an economic concept. It’s a force that impacts your lifestyle, future plans, and financial security. And unless your money is actively working to outpace it, your wealth is at risk of shrinking — even if the numbers in your bank account are going up.
